Before Edinburgh Place became the open forecourt it is today, it doubled as a car park. In 1961 the square in front of City Hall was filled with saloons, delivery vans and the three-wheeled goods tricycles that did most of Central's short-haul work.
What you can see in the photograph
- Rows of parked cars across the square, parked at angles rather than in marked bays.
- A Red Cross ambulance standing among them, its markings picked out in white.
- Three-wheeled tricycles loaded with crates — the delivery fleet of the period.
- The low buildings along the edge of the square, with the harbour just beyond.
