Victoria Harbour in 1888 was two different worlds: wharves, godowns and steamers on one shore, villages, fields and hill paths on the other.

Today both shores are equally dense with towers, which makes the old contrast hard to imagine; the family album holds a few loose prints, and online scans are too blurry to read.

This 1888 sheet carries the whole of Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon peninsula and the water between them, so the built-up city and the countryside can be read together.

1888 was a milestone in Hong Kong transport: the Peak Tram opened in May that year. Place names are printed in the romanised spelling of the day, set out across the main hills, bays and villages (see the detail shots). This is a restored reprint; the printed size differs from the original.

  • Material: canvas print, digitally restored (spots removed, losses repaired, colours rebuilt)
  • Sizes: A4 21 x 30 cm, 30 x 40 cm, 50 x 70 cm, 60 x 90 cm
  • Frame: optional, sold separately
