British forces landed at Possession Point early in 1841; that year the island was a coast of scattered villages, fields and hill paths.
You can read the story of the colony's founding, but where the sea once reached at Central is impossible to picture — the earliest photographs come decades later, so there is nothing to compare against.
This 1841 map of Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon peninsula is that year's ground itself.
British forces landed at Possession Point early in 1841 and Hong Kong was declared a free port the same year; the Treaty of Nanking ceded Hong Kong Island in 1842. The sheet shows the coastline and bays before and around that moment, and the original shore off today's Central and Sheung Wan can still be traced on it. This is a restored reprint; the printed size differs from the original.
